The life and work of Henri Verstijnen is typical of a Dutch artist in the period 1900-1940. He was born in Soekaboemi, Dutch Indies, into a wealthy Dutch family.
As a visual artist, he struggled throughout his life with the struggle between his artistic ideals and the need to support himself through commercial assignments. initially as a working ceramic design for the company Wahliss in Bohemia de Soci C mique in Maastricht and he started to focus more on free artistry. Animals, nature and his personal outlook on life are important sources of inspiration.
From 1918 to 1940 he worked in The Hague and was an active member of the Haagse Kunstkring and Schilderkundig Genootschap Pulchri Studio. His free work distinguishes itself from contemporaries by its graphic experiments and use of color.
Anyone who likes to focus on Verstijnen's work will get to know him as a centipede, who is not limited to a particular medium. His fantasy, optimism and humor come to the fore in his work. Verstijnen was especially popular with the general public as a caricaturist of 'human' animals in the rhymes of Charivarius in De Groene Amsterdammer.
